When you move to Belgium, you need to learn words like “frietjes” or “regen” by hard, and expressions such as “een pintje, alstublieft”! But that’s all you need to know to survive here, because for your everyday communication you can manage with your English without problems. From the oldest grandfather down the youngest teenager (even some little children!), everybody speaks English properly and French of course, or even German and Spanish!

The EVS-girls found a new destination for the sunny Saturday. We travelled two hours and reached Knokke, the most North-Eastern sea-side resort of the Belgian coast. It lies close to the Dutch border and is separated from the Dutch territory by the 'Zwin', a beautiful and extremely interesting natural reserve.

The 5th edition of the Bollekesfeest, organized by the City of Antwerp and brewery De Coninck, took place last weekend from Thursday to Sunday (18-20th August) in Zuiderdokken, the South of Antwerp. In total 120.000 people, according the newspaper Niewsblad.be, enjoyed during four days drinking, eating and also dancing with the performances in the main stage.

Sometimes you are blind for all the things there are in your country because you see them so much. The delicious Hungarian foods, like the Hungarian làngos or the kürtőskalács, the fresh fruits from the garden and the good wines. But after two months you begin to feel you miss something when being abroad! This was my first holiday at home, when I really could enjoy and appreciate my country’s beautiful tastes.

Sleep Inn Rivierenhof, Deurne

Last Friday, 12th of August, nine kids from 12 to 15 years old spent one funny and unforgettable night sleeping in the open air theatre Rivierenhof, in Deurne. The initiative, inside the activities for Antwerp European Youth Capital, started in March and shows the secrets of several cultural institutions during the night, every month.

The Diamond Museum of Antwerpen opens its doors every summer and welcomes all the youngsters interested in art, communication or who want to know a bit more about that amazing stone. This year, they have organized some workshops about sound, graphic design and monuments to built up one new exhibition. You can visit it from 18h August.

Curious youngsters arrived to Antwerp last week from Iceland, Romania, Ireland, Denmark, Slovenia and Estonia. The Formaat jeugdhuiswerk Vlaanderen invited them for two different interesting trainings; like creativity and event management.
Althought the main tasks were the challenge and teambuilding, the two group got many new experiences about the communication too.

Thursday night in the Museum

Antwerp European Youth Capital promotes one alternative way to discover some museums around the city for free and for everybody. This initiative takes place each last Thursday of the month and has a huge attendance of people who enjoy the performances.

Yesterday, the 29th of June, kids from the district of Borgerhout showed, their artistic work in an informal ceremony in the Bretelwei for them and some of their parents. As a reward for their work kids received pancakes with sugar or syrup and juice.

The European Voluntary Service (EVS) is a grant for the European Union to perform a labour in other European country in the field of: social service, environment, heritage, culture, art, communication, etc. But an EVS is more than “tourism”. With this experience you learn a non- formal education, which means learn and develop other some skills which complement formal education and is used to enable young people to know what they want to choose in life, whether or not they have higher education.

But why we are talking about that?

Because it is time to speak up. The fifth edition of Youth Week took place last 15th and 17th of May in Antwerp European Youth Capital and was focused in the EVS programme, supported by Youth in Action. The best projects were reward in a formal ceremony in the Zoo of Antwerp.

During two days more than 150 people from other countries of Europe shared their experiences like ex EVS and members of young organizations and discuss in small workshops: the quality of higher education, the promotion of learning mobility, the challenges and barriers to include the programme to all youngsters and how to help young people to develop their employability and entrepreneurship skills in order to improve your job prospects on the job market.
All this workshops was guided to talk about this situation in which young people is involved and has to face.

“European Union, source of opportunities”

On Tuesday, 17th May; the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, the European Youth Forum President Peter Matjašič, the Secretary General Giuseppe Porcaro and also the Commissioner Androulla Vassilou met in Antwerp with all the participants to discuss about more facilities for European Union and also the measures that European Union has to do to further improve the mobility and life of all young people without forget the real situation: unemployment, precarious work conditions and social exclusion.

“The European Union has to be a source of opportunities”, Peter Matjašič said. One of the measures that UE has launched is an ambitious programme for 2020 in which “all young people in Europe must have the possibility to spend a part of their educational pathway in other Member States”, affirmed Barroso. But is also the work of young people to make this a reality and make the dreams come true.
The day ended with the presentation of certificates to all participants and a final party in Kavka with good music and great performance from the Belgium band Societe Anonyme.

Sailing for peace in Antwerp

The final conference of My Generation, a European exchange programme about young people, took place in Antwerp on Thursday, March 31 and Friday April 1. Within the scope of this conference, young people, policymakers, employers, youth workers and teachers from 11 different European countries met each other in the former monastery of Elzenveld.

The University of Antwerp lectures children on science
